MANDARIN

We have many options for you to choose of how you want to learn Mandarin.

 

If you'd like to join a group class and aren't sure about your level, please first request a free level evaluation by using our Evaluation Request Form before registering.

 

8-WEEK SESSIONS (1.5 HR CLASSES)

Join a small-group class with maximum 6 students.

Group classes are for students 17 years old (high school senior) and above.

All classes last for 8 weeks (unless otherwise noted).

Location: Select classes are being offered in-person in Cambridge, MA and are marked *IN PERSON*. All other [unlabeled] classes are held online.

No classes*: Memorial Day (Friday, May 28th - Monday, May 31st), Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19th), Independence Day (Friday, July 2nd - Monday, July 5th), Labor Day (Monday, September 6th), Columbus Day (Monday October 11th), Veterans Day (Thursday, November 11th), Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 25th) Christmas Day (Friday, December  24th - Saturday December 25th) New Year's Day (Friday, December 31st).

INTRODUCTORY 1

Equivalent to HSK 1

Goals: Can understand and use familiar Chinese everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

INTRODUCTORY 2

Equivalent to HSK 2

Goals: Can understand sentences and frequently used Chinese expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Equivalent to HSK 2-3.

Goals: Can understand and express basic life topics clearly and understands sentence patterns, like forming a question, comparing things or describing objects.

INTRODUCTORY 4

Equivalent to HSK 3

Goals: Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

LOW INTERMEDIATE

Equivalent to HSK 4

Goals: Can understand the main ideas of complex Chinese text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

INTERMEDIATE

Equivalent to HSK 5

Goals: Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer Mandarin texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

HIGH INTERMEDIATE

Equivalent to HSK 5-6

ADVANCED

Equivalent to HSK 6

Goals: Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources of Chinese language, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

6-WEEK SESSIONS (1 HR CLASSES)

Join a small online group class with maximum 6 students.

Group classes are for students 17 years old (high school senior) and above.

Classes meet once a week for 60 minutes in 6-week sessions and  take place via Zoom video conference.

PRIVATE TUTORING

Private tutoring takes place at our Cambridge offices or online, and offers students the opportunity to benefit from face-to-face interaction, with more flexibility than our group classes. Students with specific needs, or advanced students who simply need to review and practice, may find tutoring an excellent opportunity for them. Tutoring is available for ages 6 and above.

"Semi-private" tutoring means a private group of friends, colleagues, family members, etc. where the group is provided by you (Rola does not find other students to join you).
